Hackney GP Training practices

BARTON HOUSE GROUP PRACTICE

Barton House Group Practice consists of six general practitioners, of which five are full time and one three-quarter time, who combines general practice with academic and teaching commitments.

The practice is based in Barton House Health Centre, situated in the middle of Stoke Newington, North Hackney. The purpose-built centre was opened in 1974 and is owned and administered by City & Hackney Primary Care Trust. Substantial extensions and improvements have been carried out in two phases in 1994 and 1995. and further developments are proceeding.

Our practice population is approximately 11,200, and is one of exceptional social and ethnic diversity. Whilst some of our patients live in wards which qualify for deprivation payments, there is also a substantial local population of professionals, and also many actors, writers and musicians.

There are long-established local communities of people of Jewish and Irish origin and more recently communities of people from the Caribbean, West Africa, Bangladesh, Cyprus and Turkey.

We have been a training practice since November 1998 and are a Queen Mary, University of London linked practice.

We are members of the Hackney Doctors on Call out of hours service.

We are also fortunate in having staff with a wide range of skills. These include:

Our Nurse Practitioner is able to go beyond the traditional nursing duties to take on a more autonomous role in basic diagnosis and treatment and in referring to other health professionals where appropriate.

The Practice Nurses, are responsible for health promotion and screening, taking cervical smears, giving travel and contraceptive advice, immunisations, and monitoring chronic diseases such as asthma, hypertension and diabetes.

The Advocates Our Bengali-speaking advocate works five days a week at Barton House. The Turkish-speaking advocates are available at Barton House Monday and Wednesday afternoon and Tuesday and Friday morning.

The District Nurses provide both home care and support in the community and nursing care, such as dressing of wounds and ulcers, blood tests and ear syringing in the treatment room.

The Midwives run the community ante-natal clinic, education and exercise classes and co-ordinate routine post-natal visiting from their base at the health centre.
