Regional guidelines on the Selection and re-selection of SHO posts for General Practice Training

It is regional policy that SHO posts advertised for the purpose of providing prescribed experience for general practice training will need to meet a list of minimum criteria. Initially speciality approval will be accepted as evidence that these minimum criteria are being satisfied. Monitoring of the criteria will be part of the contract monitoring undertaken by the Dean/ Director, supplemented by a questionnaire which each SHO will be asked to complete at the end of each post. Where the criteria are not being met a team from TPMDE will investigate as appropriate and agree remedial action within a specified period of time. If this agreement is not fulfilled then in consultation with the Dean/Director that post will be deselected for the purpose of prescribed experience for vocational training for general practice training and it will not be possible to issue a VTR/2 on completion of the post.

These criteria will apply both to those SHO posts on recognised training schemes and all other posts which purport to be recognised for general practice training, i.e. for self selecting SHOs undertaking their own scheme.
