Aims and objectives

Aims

• To train the doctor to manage all the responsibilities of General Practice, both clinical and organisational.
• To encourage reflection and self understanding.
• To develop understanding of the doctor/ patient relationship; joys and pitfalls.
• To critically appraise research and development in medicine.
• To encourage divergent thinking and understanding of the role of medicine.
• To understand the epidemiology relating to primary care.

Objectives

• Gaining the clinical knowledge skills and attitudes specific to General Practice.
• Develop organisational skills and acquire knowledge of practice management.
• Learn how to be an effective member of a multi-disciplinary team.
• Become familiar with critical reading of medical literature.
• To perform medical audit.
• To be aware of literature concerning the consultation and understand how this affects practice and to develop consulting skills.
• To study the doctor/ patient relationship.
• To appreciate the epidemiological differences between primary and secondary care.
